A New Kind of Sports Social Network

This is one of my favorite projects, a web start up in the purest sense of the word. It was ini­tially devel­oped by a few friends of mine who are not only inter­ested in sports but also in social net­work­ing and the power of social networking.

It all started last year just before the 2007–2008 NFL Foot­bal sea­son, this year the site has been upgraded and tweaked to the point where I think we can really make it a great user expe­ri­ence and alot of fun. So here’s the background:

What is the Fanyard?

  • Fan­Yard is a sports com­mu­nity where you can make your own pre­dic­tions on NFL, NCAAF foot­ball game out­comes and NBA, NCAAB bas­ket­ball game out­comes and track your per­for­mance against the rest of the com­mu­nity each week. Fans com­pete weekly for a spot on the leader­board so you can start anytime.
  • For each game in the NFL, NBA, NCAAF and NCAAB the Fan­Yard uses everyone’s pre­dic­tions to cal­cu­late the Yard­stick, giv­ing you a mea­sure of the community’s col­lec­tive opin­ion of the game outcome.
  • You can post com­ments, analy­sis, and debate game out­comes in the Game Yard or inter­act with other Fans through mem­bers’ Yard pages.

What are the cool features?

  • For each game, Fan­Yard uses the com­mu­ni­ties foot­ball picks to cal­cu­late the Yard­stick, giv­ing you a mea­sure of the net­works col­lec­tive opin­ion of the game outcome.
  • Live scores and score cards in your Yard (Your Yard is your own pro­file, plus game picks and more.
  • Per­son­al­ize your infor­ma­tion — you can now update your pro­file with a lit­tle blurb about your­self; also, make sure to pick your favorite teams.
  • Fans and Clans — by pick­ing your favorite teams, you’ll be grouped with other fans of your team in the new Team Pages.
  • Each team’s fans will also square off against the fans of every other team to see who is the best at mak­ing foot­ball picks, ranked 1 through 32. Do your team proud!
  • Email your score­card (how good you are at mak­ing picks all sea­son long) and share it with friends.
  • An all new picks inter­face mak­ing eas­ier to see how every­one else think the game is going to end up
  • Game Yards (inter­act about every game), Team Yard (Hook­ing fans up with Fans), and MyYard (Do what you want how you want and smack talk all you want).
  • Last sea­son the “Joes” on Fan­yard beat the “Pros” all sea­son long!  The social net­work opin­ion is bet­ter than any­one closed group (think the Wikipedia of sports)
