The FanYard
A New Kind of Sports Social Network
This is one of my favorite projects, a web start up in the purest sense of the word. It was initially developed by a few friends of mine who are not only interested in sports but also in social networking and the power of social networking.
It all started last year just before the 2007–2008 NFL Footbal season, this year the site has been upgraded and tweaked to the point where I think we can really make it a great user experience and alot of fun. So here’s the background:
What is the Fanyard?
- FanYard is a sports community where you can make your own predictions on NFL, NCAAF football game outcomes and NBA, NCAAB basketball game outcomes and track your performance against the rest of the community each week. Fans compete weekly for a spot on the leaderboard so you can start anytime.
- For each game in the NFL, NBA, NCAAF and NCAAB the FanYard uses everyone’s predictions to calculate the Yardstick, giving you a measure of the community’s collective opinion of the game outcome.
- You can post comments, analysis, and debate game outcomes in the Game Yard or interact with other Fans through members’ Yard pages.
What are the cool features?
- For each game, FanYard uses the communities football picks to calculate the Yardstick, giving you a measure of the networks collective opinion of the game outcome.
- Live scores and score cards in your Yard (Your Yard is your own profile, plus game picks and more.
- Personalize your information — you can now update your profile with a little blurb about yourself; also, make sure to pick your favorite teams.
- Fans and Clans — by picking your favorite teams, you’ll be grouped with other fans of your team in the new Team Pages.
- Each team’s fans will also square off against the fans of every other team to see who is the best at making football picks, ranked 1 through 32. Do your team proud!
- Email your scorecard (how good you are at making picks all season long) and share it with friends.
- An all new picks interface making easier to see how everyone else think the game is going to end up
- Game Yards (interact about every game), Team Yard (Hooking fans up with Fans), and MyYard (Do what you want how you want and smack talk all you want).
- Last season the “Joes” on Fanyard beat the “Pros” all season long! The social network opinion is better than anyone closed group (think the Wikipedia of sports)
